Examples and summaries of research topics

(1) Complex nonlinear seismic response analysis considering extensive interactive effects among soils, foundations, structures and damage-control damping systems
A complex nonlinear dynamic analysis is used to clarify the destruction mechanism in a system of this kind, based on seismic ground motions obtained from an active earthquake fault.

(2) Analysis of the sloshing response in a large liquid storage tank under an earthquake excitation, taking account of the nonlinearity of the coupled liquid-floating-roof system
In order to predict the sloshing response in a large floating-roof liquid storage tank subject to a long-period seismic ground motion, a nonlinear structure-liquid coupled analysis program is developed with the capability of tracing the nonlinear portion of the stress and damage process in the liquid and roof. This is then used to clarify the collapse and submersion mechanism for a single-deck type floating roof.

(3) Predictive analysis of failure behavior in a naturally deposited clay foundation in the event of a very large-scale subduction-zone earthquake
A water-soil coupled dynamic finite element deformation analysis program is developed incorporating a highly accurate elasto-plastic constitutive model of a naturally deposited clay foundation, and is used to clarify the deformation and failure mechanism in a naturally deposited clay foundation in the event of a long-cycle subduction-zone earthquake of long duration.
